IACUC

Researchers work at training their dogs at the Pack Forest facility near Mt Rainier.

Primary oversight of animal use at the University of Washington is the responsibility of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC supports animal welfare and ensures compliance with federal regulations through:

  • Review and approval of all proposed animal projects before they can begin
  • Regular inspection of animal facilities
  • Semi-annual review of the University’s animal program
  • Investigation of animal welfare concerns

UW’s IACUC is comprised of veterinarians, researchers, other UW staff, and representatives of the public. The committee’s composition is designed by regulation to encompass a broad base of relevant knowledge and to represent both scientific and non-scientific interests. IACUC members are appointed by the Institutional Official (IO), a role currently held by the Associate Vice Provost of Animal Care, Outreach, and the 3Rs. The IACUC meets monthly and meetings are open to the public.
